Description
The Frank Baden papers span 21 linear feet and date circa 1927 to circa 1986. The collection documents Baden’s career through architectural drawings and reprographic copies, furniture parts and entire furniture pieces, AIA Board Annual Reports, correspondence regarding specific architecture or furniture design projects, journals such as Pencil Points and Architectural Form, and Alpha Rho Chi Fraternity Official Reports.
Background
Frank Baden studied architecture at the University of Southern California and graduated in 1927. Throughout his time at the University of California until 1929, Frank worked in the office of Webber, Staunton and Spaulding. After 1929, Baden focused almost exclusively on designing furniture. Baden designed and manufactured custom furniture for twelve years in his own cabinet factory. He taught at the University of Southern California and at Chouinard Art Institute from 1939 through 1942. Baden also created set design for motion pictures and built custom furniture for actors.
