Description
The collection contains files related to accreditation of Pepperdine College and Pepperdine University from 1953 to 1993.
Most items are reports submitted to the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) or the previous accreditation body,
the Western College Association and the California State Board of Education, or reports returned to Pepperdine after accreditation
visits and evaluations. Other items include articles and correspondence.
Background
Pepperdine University is accredited by WASC, the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Pepperdine College was first
accredited in 1949, by an earlier accreditation board. Accreditation is an ongoing process requiring significant data collection,
many reports, and visits by WASC staff to Pepperdine's campuses. The process is designed to provide data and information for
better understanding university goals, infrastructure, processes, and its own progress. (Five other academic bodies also accredit
Pepperdine, but the majority of the reports are from WASC.) WASC was formed in 1962, and accredited all institutions previously
accredited by the Association of American Universities, North Central Association.
