    Scope and Content of Collection

Yosemite views in the mammoth plate format, chiefly taken by Carleton E. Watkins during his 1861 trip to the valley. Several images are of uncertain date, and one (item 31) was issued by I.W. Taber sometime after 1877. This image is not from a known Watkins negative and may be by another photographer. Includes one view of the Mariposa grove of giant sequoia trees, near Yosemite Valley.
    Additional Notes on Collection:
The prints in this collection have various physical characteristics, suggesting they were compiled by the Sierra Club from several sources. Many are the "dome-topped" prints with rounded upper corners that characterize Watkins' early views, suggesting a date of 1861. However, some images that may date to 1865-1866 have trimmed corners in the present collection, perhaps done to create a uniform set even though comprised of images from various dates. (For example, see item 26.) These dome-topped prints are mostly signed by Watkins and dated 1865, which is presumably a date of printing. Other mounts in this collection are completely different and appear to be later, bearing printed captions. (See item 28, for example.) The earlier prints are on mounts with ms. annotations in several hands, some of which appear to be 19th century, but none of which is recognizable as primary annotation by the photographer or his staff. Many bear noted elevations of features which have been scored out and corrected.
