The collection principally comprises oral history interviews conducted from 2008 through 2012 as part of the Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A. research project. Project participants conducted an extensive series of oral histories with many of Los Angeles' key artists, filmmakers, curators, collectors, and critics, focusing on postwar art (1945-1980). Many of the participating cultural institutions received funding from the Getty Foundation, which collected the resulting interviews. Material also includes transcripts of interviews; recordings of lectures, symposia, and panel discussions; short documentary films; and printed brochures and announcements related to the project.

Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A. 1945-1980 was a collaboration of more than sixty cultural institutions across Southern California coming together to tell the story of the birth of the Los Angeles scene and how it became a major new force in the art world.
