The San Diego Audubon Society Collection documents the organization's San Diego chapter from 1953 through 1981. The collection is comprised of financial records, annual budget reports, conservation correspondence, publications and newspaper clippings, articles of incorporation, and government citations. Highlights of the collection include fish and game surveys, summer field trip curricula, excerpts from the newsletters "Nature Study" and "Sketches," and minutes of the board of directors dating from 1952 to 1979.

Organized in 1948 and incorporated in 1953, the San Diego Chapter of the Audubon Society (SDAS) is dedicated to promoting preservation and conservation activities. The organization is involved with educational programs on ecology and natural science for citizens in the greater San Diego region. SDAS is also involved in managing several wildlife preserves, including the Silverwood Wildlife Sanctuary and the Anstine-Audubon preserve in Oceanside. The organization is still active in environmental planning issues; assessing land use and development projects in the area, including development, the preservation of natural resources, and regional planning.
