Description
Lawrence Morton (1904-1987) played the organ for silent movies and studied in New York before moving to Los Angeles, California,
in 1940. He was the executive director of
Evenings on the Roof (later renamed
Monday Evening Concerts) from 1952-71. The collection consists of concert programs, 6 scrapbooks, and correspondence of composers related to the
Monday Evening Concerts of Los Angeles, 1955-67.
Background
Morton was born in 1904; he played the organ for silent movies and studied in New York before moving to Los Angeles, California,
in 1940; wrote music criticism for Script magazine; executive director, Evenings on the Roof (later renamed Monday Evening Concerts), 1952-71; director of the Ojai
Music Festival; as curator of music at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, he staged several Bing Concerts each year; he
died in 1987.
