Description
This collection contains the personal papers of Harold E. Fischer, who was an Air Force pilot during the Korean War. He was captured and held as a prisoner of war from 1953-1955.
Background
Fischer was born in Swea City, Iowa in 1925. He was a Navy Cadet during WWII, joined the Air Force in 1949. In 1950, he graduated from Air Training Command. Serving in Korea, Fischer was pilot of an F-86. He shot down his first enemy aircraft in 1952 and became an ace a year later. He would go on to becoming a double ace. Fischer became a prisoner of war in April 1953, and was held captive until 1955. He remained in the service until 1978, and was honored for his work with the Air Force Advisory Group in Viet Nam from 1971 1972. His honors include the Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal.
