Description
The William Carney Papers, 1942-1987, consists of writings, correspondence, journals, engagement books, photographs, and slides. Drafts of various written works, both published and unpublished, make up the bulk of the collection. Correspondence is both incoming and outgoing, and correspondents consist of family, friends, and acquaintances. The photographs and slides are primarily of Carney, his friends and family, and of various trips taken. Of particular interest is Carney's World War II journal during his time as a gunner in the United States Air Force.
Background
Born in 1922, William Carney served in the United States Air Force as a gunner in World War II. After the war he attended the Missouri School of Journalism and obtained his masters in French from the University of California, Berkeley. Carney later taught French in the University of California system, and in the 1970's he restored Victorian and Edwardian homes in San Francisco. He published three works of Gay erotic literature in his lifetime, The Real Thing, A Year in the Closet, and The Rose Exterminator. Carney passed away in 1987, at the age of 64.
