California Geological Survey Maps

Note

For descriptions of individual maps see online catalog call number G9990.C3 no.

Scope and Content Note

The maps in this collection are, for the most part, preliminary sketches for the printed maps published by the California State Geological Survey between 1867 and 1874. However, since their scale is generally larger, their detail is greater, and they may include information not transferred to the printed maps.
The largest single group of maps concerns Nevada and Placer Counties. About half of these are plots of mining claims, and the other half relate to Bowman's report on Auriferous gravels, Papers no. 2; these last are identified by their reference to "Pliocene gravels." Except for three maps, the collection is restricted to California and Nevada. The three exceptions concern, respectively, the Oregon border, Colorado, and central Europe.
The numbers identifying the maps in the following list correspond to no system of arrangement, but refer simply to the order in which the maps are filed. For a table showing the correlation between these numbers and those assigned when the maps were originally turned over to the University, see the last section of this guide.
Maps of a single specific location, i. e. Grass Valley, Mono County, La Purissima Mission, etc., are listed fully under that name. When necessary - particularly in the case of the names of mining claims - there are one or more cross references either under the name of the county in which the place lies or of the city which it is near. When a map includes the area of more than one, but less than four, counties, it is listed fully under each county concerned; when four or more counties are involved, it is listed under the particular area of the state concerned, i. e. California (North-central), etc.
