The Rosalie H. Wax Papers are built around a 1981-1982 revision, funded by the Rockefeller Foundation, of her Tule Lake field
notes, written for the Japanese American Evacuation and Resettlement Study in 1944-1945. The collection contains a final and
first draft of the revised field notes, plus interviews conducted in 1981-1982 with former internees at Tule Lake, and longitudinal

Rosalie Hankey Wax, Professor of Anthropology and Education at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, from 1973 to
1981, was a staff researcher for the Japanese American Evacuation and Resettlement Study (JERS) at the University of California,
Berkeley, from 1943-1945. In June 1943, JERS sent Wax (then Rosalie Hankey) to the Gila Relocation Center at Rivers, Arizona.
She was transferred to the Tule Lake Relocation Center near Newell, California, in February 1944 where she spent the next
fifteen months. Wax's book,
Doing Fieldwork: Warnings and Advice, published in 1971, uses her experience at Gila and Tule Lake to develop and illustrate her approach to anthropological fieldwork.
Copies of Wax's original field notes and other reports for JERS are included with the
