Digital image files were prepared from selected Library originals by the Library Photographic Service. Library originals were copied onto 35mm color transparency film; the film was scanned and transferred to Kodak Photo CD (by Custom Process); and the Photo CD files were color-corrected and saved in JFIF (JPEG) format for use as viewing files.

    Acquisition Information

    The Stereoviews of Indians and the Colorado River from the J.W. Powell Survey were transferred from the C. Hart Merriam Papers (BANC MSS 83/129 c).

    Scope and Content

    The Stereoviews of Indians and the Colorado River from the J.W. Powell Survey consists of 107 stereographic prints taken from circa 1869 to circa 1874. The photographers include John K. Hilliers, E.O. Beaman, and James Fenmore. John Wesley Powell's exploration of the Colorado River occurred under the auspices of the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, from 1869 to 1872. Some of the stereographs present are published under the imprint of the "Indians of the Colorado Valley" series by J.F. Jarvis. The collection consists of scenes in the Colorado Valley, including views of the Colorado River and the Native American inhabitants of this region and their dwellings. Some of the Colorado Valley Indian photographs are dated 1874.
    Printed captions are reprinted in the container listing. Captions in parentheses appear in manuscript on the stereographs. Captions in brackets have been supplied.
