Background
The Crystal Ice Manufacturing Company began as the Whittier Ice and Cold Storage Company in 1914 by C. Caldwell; the company used horses and wagons to deliver ice to homes in Southern California; L.O. Montegomery purchased the company in 1915; as the business grew, trucks replaced the horses to expedite service; in 1928, all ice was sold to homes, cafes, and butcher shops, but by 1930 business expanded to provide ice for railroad cars carrying citrus fruits; in February 1938, Philip L. Gabriel purchased the company, built a seasonal ice storage building, and the name changed to the Crystal Ice Company of Whittier; in 1941 the company expanded to include its Fullerton site, and a second food locker plant was also built.
